National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation (NIFDS) is the research institute under Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA). Its key functions include conducting risk assessments, monitoring food and drugs and developing guidelines and test methods through research and development (R&D) to support the policy for protection and promotion of the public health with a view to ensuring safety of foods, drugs, medical devices and cosmetics.

The mission of NIFDS is scientific investigation, research and evaluation to secure food and drug safety.

For this, the NIFDS was significantly reorganized on May 1, 2009 and its structure was expanded to further strengthen the control of hazardous substances for humans, replacing the old organization whose focus was largely on toxicological and pharmacological research. The recent reorganization is meaningful as all the R&D projects will be managed by NIFDS, as in the relationship between U.S. FDA and its National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), to maximize the use of research results in KFDA's policy making. Newly restructured NIFDS will cooperate greatly with KFDA headquarters as its partner in review and policy making process.

NIFDS will make the strategic plan to play a leading role in food and drug policy for public health promotion. We will also provide valuable training opportunities for international harmonization to reviewers and pharmaceutical companies by keeping close partnership and communication with foreign regulatory counterparts. NIFDS will spare no efforts toward the world's leading research agency with top-class systems to provide the best service for safety management in food and drugs.
